Giddy for war, the Globe and Mail's editorial board explicitly dismisses international law and endorses regime change in Iran through U.S./Israeli military force. We ask that Media responders challenge the Globe and Mail. Here are some optional angles:
- The editorial downplays the killing of Iran’s head of state by arguing that Iran cannot expect the “niceties of international law” to protect it. This dismissive stance is a startling reversal of the Globe’s own precedent. For years, the Globe has published editorials and op-eds defending military actions in Gaza as lawful exercises of "self-defence" under the same international framework it now labels a mere "nicety." This selective application of the rules-based order undermines the Globe's journalistic integrity.
- By explicitly endorsing calls for Iranians to overthrow their government via external U.S./Israeli military force, the Globe is advocating for a direct violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the political independence of any state. This editorial effectively calls for a return to the era of lawless western intervention—the very same "regime change" logic that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
- The Globe frames the current escalation as a strategic geopolitical objective while ignoring the immediate human cost. Reports from UNESCOand the Red Crescent confirm that an airstrike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' primary school in Minab killed approximately 150 civilians, most of them children. By omitting these verified atrocities while calling for further military force, the Globe is failing its readers.
