In Toronto, a woman wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with an insignia associated with the Canadian-listed terrorist organization Kahane Chai (Kach) threatened to attack pro-Palestine protesters while brandishing a bottle of ammonium hydroxide, a highly corrosive chemical. The logo she wore specifically represented the Jewish Defense League (JDL), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the FBI. The JDL was founded by Meir Kahane, who also created the Kach party in Israel.
The only outlet to cover the story was CityNews Toronto, which reported the incident using a bare-bones police account and omitted the political context. CJPME filed a complaint with the journalist and editors. Following this, CityNews updated the article and headline to include key information, and they also aired a broadcast segment about the incident. CJPME appreciates CityNews for taking corrective action and drawing attention to this alarming event.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Canadian media has ignored the story. In stark contrast, the incident involving student protesters at TMU and an Israeli soldier has received international attention and spawned a misleading media circus. This disparity underscores a troubling double standard in media coverage, where threats of violence against Palestine advocates are largely overlooked.
