Inaccurate and misleading characterization of the Israeli army as diverse and inclusive

"Israeli society is made up of approximately 21% of Palestinians, who are marginalized and excluded from receiving any employment, healthcare, education and military benefits. While Israel exercises a policy of mandatory conscription, Muslim, and Christian Palestinian citizens are exempt from military service because they are deemed “disloyal” and “untrustworthy” by Israel. Furthermore, the refusal of Palestinians to join the Israeli army is exemplary of the continued military occupation of Palestinian land including the West Bank and Gaza Strip and their violent treatment of Palestinians. In other words, the military is not inclusive or diverse but segregationist." Continue reading

Israeli casualty figures falsely doubled and Palestinian numbers omitted on CBC As It Happens

"14 Israelis have been killed this year according to The Associated Press. 7 of these casualties occurred during a January 27th shooting in Jerusalem.[i] As such, the number given by Ms. Sommer was a significant error requiring correction — double the real total during the stated period." Misleading descriptions of Palestinian resistance by CityNews Toronto

"When Israel carries out arrest raids it is often met with Palestinian resistance. However, as The Associated Press itself regularly reports, much of the resistance is typically from unarmed civilians throwing stones or committing other acts of non-violent civil disobedience. Often, innocent civilians are killed during these arrest raids. 15 children have been killed as a result of Israeli military and settler violence this year alone." Continue reading

Factual error on number of Israeli settlers in occupied West Bank in Toronto Star article

"Further, you still claim that since 1967, 'more than 500,000 Jewish settlers have moved into dozens of settlements' which is factually incorrect as it excludes settlers living in east Jerusalem which is occupied territory as recognized by the international community. According to Foundation for Middle East Peace, 'by 2014 there were some 700,000 Israeli Jews living in settlements in the occupied territories.' This is a factual error that must be corrected."   Continue reading

Unfounded claims against a political candidate and lack of Palestinian perspective

"I insist that you update your article to include a Palestinian perspective regarding the meaning of this legitimate chant, instead of relying on interpretations sourced entirely by perspectives which are hostile to Palestinian narratives and activism."   Continue reading

Israeli-only footage used in report on Jenin raid by CP24

"There is a huge issue with the asymmetrical nature of the video used in the segment, which exclusively used video sourced from the Israeli army, which was specifically released for Israeli public relations purposes. It is a serious ethical issue if the party which is accused of a violent attack is also allowed to provide the sole visual representation of that event. It is your responsibility as professional journalists to provide a balanced report." Continue reading

Dehumanization of Palestinians killed in Jenin raid in Toronto Star article

"It is frankly appalling that you write several paragraphs about the settler rampage in Hawara and the subsequent settler attack on Monday but make no mention of the fact that a Palestinian was shot and killed in Hawara. To be clear, around 100 Palestinians were injured and one was killed. It is not fair to mention that two Israelis were killed and not mention the significant casualties of Palestinians. It is even more troubling that you mention that two Israeli brothers were killed but you fail to report on the murder of Sameh al-Aqtash, just four days after he returned from Turkey where he had been supporting earthquake victims. If we take seriously that Palestinian life matters equally to those of Israelis, a full and fair broadcast must mention the casualties of Palestinians in this story. Otherwise, the story is incomplete and unfair."   Continue reading

Palestinian voices amplified on Kufiyah incident at Halifax Park West School

"Your news article highlights the shameful incident at Park West School in Halifax where Palestinian students were reproached for wearing the Kufiyah by the school’s principal. I commend you for your thoughtful and inclusive coverage of this incident. I especially appreciated your interviews with members of the local Palestinian community, including the President of the Atlantic Canada Palestinian Society." Continue reading

Article misses broader context of Israeli extremism

"My organization has also pointed out that Canada’s Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade of Canada, Mary Ng met recently with Ofir Akunis, a minister in Israel's far-right government. In addition to serving in Israel’s most right-wing government ever, Minister Akunis is himself an anti-Palestinian extremist and a supremacist. While the international community (and all of Canada’s federal parties) support an independent state for Palestinians, Akunis supports Israel’s full annexation of the Palestinian West Bank, stating, 'I will never agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank] and I will continue to promote, with all my might, the application of sovereignty [annexation], which is an historical process that cannot be prevented.' In 2017, he claimed that 'Israel in its entirety is the country of the Jewish People, and the right to it belongs only to the Jewish People.'" Continue reading

Factual error about Palestinian killed in Huwara by CBC

"You write that 'one Palestinian man [was] killed by rioting Israeli settlers.' In fact, while the fact that he was killed by Israeli fire is not in dispute, it is an open question of whether he was killed by settlers or by Israeli soldiers. Relatives of Sameh Aqtesh claim that he was shot by Israeli soldiers, while investigations by Israeli news outlets are not conclusive but confirm the presence of Israeli soldiers during the attack. For example, Haaretz has reported that although 'the source of the gunfire that killed Aqtash cannot be determined,' the killing 'took place in front of soldiers who were standing next to a group of settlers.'"
