Re: "How Israelis and Palestinians can make a one-state solution work"

"There is no symmetry between resistance fighters defending their homes in Jenin and one of the world’s most sophisticated armies laying waste to it. To describe Israel’s attack on Jenin as an effort to eliminate armed groups is absurd when one reviews the uncontroversial facts on the ground. The real objective was to instill terror in the people of Jenin, destroying their homes and vital infrastructure."

Philip Slayton's article on Israel and Palestine has been criticized by both sides for its attempt at neutrality. As Desmond Tutu, a staunch supporter of Palestinian liberation, said, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor."

There is no symmetry between resistance fighters defending their homes in Jenin and one of the world’s most sophisticated armies laying waste to it. To describe Israel’s attack on Jenin as an effort to eliminate armed groups is absurd when one reviews the uncontroversial facts on the ground. The real objective was to instill terror in the people of Jenin, destroying their homes and vital infrastructure. It was an extremist, far-right government essentially declaring, "Resistance is futile."

Tutu's quote concludes, "If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."
