Dear Steven,

I am writing to thank you for the very personal article, “Islamophobia: “I have never seen it this bad.” published in the Toronto Star on November 8.

Your article clearly states the form of discrimination against any sector of our society and informs specifically as to the type of verbal violence women experience.

Importantly, your article includes reference to the rise in antisemitism as well as  Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism associated with the violent events in Israel and Gaza. Such balance is necessary at this time as individuals of all religions in this violence are feeling threatened along the lines you express.

Yes, most of our leaders are missing or being muddle-headed on the violence taking place in the Middle East. This lack of leadership certainly adds fuel to the fire of racism and hate messages. People like you and articles such as yours have the potential to cause them to emerge with a mission to reduce the enmity amongst some Canadians.

I am also grateful to the editors at the Toronto Star who made the decision to publish your article. This balanced, personal view of the increase in hate against individuals because of their religion and/or ethnicity must be placed in front of the public to assist in the eradication of such crimes.

Steven, I wish you the best and trust your exposure to these issues through your work does not take a personal toll upon your health.

All best wishes
Tom
