Re: “Canada votes for UN resolution calling for Israel-Hamas ceasefire"

"There is no doubt Hamas needs to be held accountable for their deadly attack on October 7; but not at the expense of the Palestinians. Israeli forces have killed tens of thousands, destroyed or damaged 60 percent of all housing units in the Gaza strip, and displaced 80 percent of Gazans from their homes."

Is Canada starting to stand on the right side of history? A definite first step in the right direction was our support of the UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

An increasing number of Canadians and a diverse group of organizations have been demanding that Canada call for a permanent and immediate ceasefire for several weeks. 286,719 Canadians signed the House of Commons e-petition that called on Canada to support their demand. Diverse organizations such as Independent Jewish Voices, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, the Assembly of First Nations and the National Council of Canadian Muslims have voiced their support as well.

Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself. However, how they have been defending themselves is what Canadians are saying is wrong. There is no doubt Hamas needs to be held accountable for their deadly attack on October 7; but not at the expense of the Palestinians. Israeli forces have killed tens of thousands, destroyed or damaged 60 percent of all housing units in the Gaza strip, and displaced 80 percent of Gazans from their homes.

Peace is indeed possible for Israel but only if there is justice for Palestinians. Canada’s vote at the UN is a glimmer of hope for many of us given what has been a very devastating two months to witness!
