Dear CP24 News Team,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) to thank you for your recent segment regarding Israel-Hamas negotiations aired on February 24 by CP24 at 18:23.

Your coverage both provided critical perspectives and reporting on anti-Palestinian racism and highlighted the important work of the Palestinian Youth Movement. Too often, Palestinian activism is either ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media outlets, which ultimately impedes the delivery of objective news to viewers. Your efforts contribute to more balanced and nuanced reporting of Palestinian solidarity.

I was also appreciative of your coverage of the survey conducted by the group, which exposed workplace retaliation and intimidation against professionals who show solidarity with Palestine. Shedding light on the discrimination and psychological violence against Palestinians and their advocates is critical, especially amid Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.

While this segment was generally balanced and informative, there are a couple of notes to consider in future reporting. Given that you have reported about one hospital in particular, it would have been helpful for viewers to know the name of the one you were referring to. Further, the hospital in Northern Gaza has not been able to operate since November, not only due to its brief capture by Israeli troops, but also because of the complete collapse of the healthcare system in Gaza. The resources they receive are insufficient to sustain it. Additionally, it would have been preferable to provide more attention to the severity of the starvation faced by children in Gaza, only briefly touched upon in your segment. For instance, Save the Children has highlighted that 1.1 million children are at risk of death due to starvation, a method of warfare utilized by Israel, which is strictly prohibited under International Humanitarian Law.

Thank you once again for prioritizing Palestinian perspectives. Your commitment to fair and accurate reporting is vital, and I urge you to continue this critical work. I also hope you will consider my critiques in future reporting of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Matta,
