CBC segment misrepresents Marc Carney’s position on Palestine

"By airing only this partial quote, the CBC segment risks whitewashing Carney’s stance, leaving listeners with the false impression that he is advocating for peace. In reality, his vision legitimizes the position of the occupier—one that aligns with Israel’s ongoing genocide, apartheid, and dispossession of Palestinians."

To the CBC Newsroom,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East regarding your radio segment that aired today at 6:20 a.m.

The segment included a clip from Marc Carney in which he was quoted as advocating for peace in the region:

“There is a moral imperative to move forward and an imperative in -- in a question earlier about the pathway to ultimate peace. It's not going to lead to ultimate peace in the region unless Gaza is stabilized and ultimately on the path towards a Palestinian state.”

This excerpt gives the impression that Carney is a neutral voice promoting stability and statehood for Palestinians. However, this is a selective representation of what he actually said.

In full, Carney stated his vision as one where Palestinians live “side by side in security with Israel — a Zionist, if you will, Palestinian state that recognizes the right of Israel not just to exist, but to prosper and not live in fear.”

Carney’s version of “peace” demands Palestinian subjugation—requiring them to recognize and accommodate a state that continues to occupy, bomb, and displace them.

By airing only this partial quote, the CBC segment risks whitewashing Carney’s stance, leaving listeners with the false impression that he is advocating for peace. In reality, his vision legitimizes the position of the occupier—one that aligns with Israel’s ongoing genocide, apartheid, and dispossession of Palestinians.

We urge CBC to ensure that future coverage includes Palestinian perspectives that critically examine such statements and the colonial assumptions that underpin them.
