Bias toward Israel in Canadian Press article

"Midway through the piece there is this passage, “Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.” This point is only half the story. You should also be informing your readers “since October 8th, Israel has massacred more Palestinians than since the beginning of recorded time”.  Fair is fair."

Dear Mr. Robertson and the Canadian Press editorial newsroom,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) regarding your wire article, “Envoy says Canada is coming closer to recognizing Palestinian statehoodpublished July 9, 2025, by National Newswatch.

First, I’d like to thank you for this article which gives some needed exposure to Ambassador Mona Abuamara who is largely ignored by mainstream media news in Canada.

Articles like this help counter the vastly biased landscape dominated by the Israeli and US narrative. There are a couple of passages though that raised concerns.

Midway through the piece there is this passage, “Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.” This point is only half the story. You should also be informing your readers “since October 8th, Israel has massacred more Palestinians than since the beginning of recorded time”.  Fair is fair.

Why do you only empathize with one side in this lopsided slaughter?

It is also noted that Hamas “massacre” killed 1200 people while Israeli strikes “killed” almost 60,000 Palestinians.

A very volatile use of language for Hamas’s actions and a more passive language for the much greater Israeli slaughter.

In the following paragraph, the article once again presents only part of the picture, stating there has been “a spike in hate crimes targeting Jews.” While this is a serious concern that warrants attention, the exclusion of the corresponding rise in hate crimes against Palestinian and Arab Canadians is both misleading and irresponsible.

Numerous reports, including one by CJPME , have documented a significant surge in anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab hate incidents across Canada. It is also well established that many Arab Canadians are reluctant to report such crimes due to fears of retribution or a lack of trust in being treated fairly by law enforcement. By excluding this context, the article presents a one-sided narrative that fails to reflect the broader realities faced by racialized communities in Canada.

Will you publish an amendment to this line which includes a spike in hate crimes against Arab Canadians as well?

Again, I thank you for this article and its important subject but lines like the ones noted peppered into the article undermine it and serve to create the slow drip drip of skewed language we have heard for too long. Most Canadians see through this now.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response,

Jeff Winch
