Language does not reflect the criminal nature of Israel's actions

Since May, Israel has been controlling the deadly and chaotic, and highly limited, distribution of food through the so-called US-Israel backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, with the Gaza Ministry of Health reporting that there have been 2,018 fatalities and more than 14,947 injuries between May 27 and August 21, 2025 among people trying to access food supplies.

To the Globe and Mail Editors,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to give feedback on your recent article, “Palestinians in Gaza hope state recognition brings an end to the war (Thursday, September 25, 2025).

The article opens by referencing the “Hamas-Israel war”. This is not a war, it’s a genocide.

A United Nations commission of inquiry found that four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law have been carried out since the October 8, 2023: killing members of a group, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to destroy the group, and preventing births.

Israeli politicians have openly called for a second Nakba, expressing genocidal intent to dispossess the Palestinian people. One letter distributed in the occupied West Bank read: “Emigrate to Jordan or be exterminated” (October 26, 2023).

Additionally, CJPME has noticed that the Globe and Mail is often explicit about Israeli casualties but ambiguous when it comes to Palestinian casualties and war crimes being committed by Israel. For example, in this section of the article:

"Despite Israel’s current offensive to capture Gaza City, which is suffering from famine, the widespread starvation elsewhere in the Gaza..."

In this context, your use of the phrasing “which is suffering from famine” omits the insidious reasons Palestinians in Gaza are facing man-made famine conditions. Not only has Israel been imposing a brutal siege on the Gaza strip since 2007, including controlling the flow of food into Gaza and counting how many calories Palestinians consume, but Israel has also not allowed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza for months.

In these ways, your reporting is neither accurate or fair and should be amended to reflect the criminal nature of Israel’s actions.

I kindly await your response.
