Students in Canada and all across North America organized encampments to demand that their universities divest from weapons manufacturers and companies complicit in Israel’s genocide. These are the same companies that produce parts for F-35 fighter jets used in the bombardment of Palestinians in Gaza. There is a double standard and lack of context in this passage. While it is mentioned that 20 Israeli hostages were released as part of phase one of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, it fails to mention that the same agreement included the release of around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Israeli prisons. While the author allows Canadian politicians to vent outrage at the “heinous terrorist attacks” of Oct. 7th, there is not a syllable acknowledging the two years of genocide endured by Palestinians. For 735 days we saw 735 relentless massacres of innocents in Gaza. This fact cannot be left out of the article if you are going to mention October 7th multiple times. Continue reading

It is misleading to describe Israeli settlers as merely “taking over much of the territory,” as though this were a natural or benign process. Israeli settlements constitute a clear violation of international law (specifically, Article 49(6) of the Fourth Geneva Convention) and represent the illegal occupation of Palestinian land. In addition to highlighting the role that municipal politics can play in putting pressure on the federal government on behalf of the community concerned about Israel’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, and providing multiple examples of similar initiatives at municipal level across Canada, the article points out clearly where Canada is falling short, such as the disparity in Canada’s refugee and visa programs for  Palestinians vs. Ukrainians and Afghans, and Canada’s continued export of military components to Israel.  Continue reading

To so crudely question the well-documented famine and the Palestinian death count is cruel, offensive, and shoddy. If one is to raise such serious allegations, that virtually the entire international human rights community is conspiring to invent false claims about Israel’s genocide, a journalist ought to investigate the questions meaningfully, not only cite baseless Israeli government and military denials.
