Dear Mr. Van Praet and Mr. York,
I am writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express my appreciation regarding the article by Nicolas Van Praet and Geoffrey York published in the Globe and Mail on May 4, 2023.
Your article’s firm language left no doubt that the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec investment in the Israeli firm Policity Ltd. is unethical. I appreciated your honest approach in including the word ‘torture’ in your reporting. Thank you for putting the spotlight on Palestinian political prisoners in Israel where even children are routinely held in solitary confinement.
I would like to point out that Policity Ltd. is the subject of an international boycott campaign for its involvement in the oppression of Palestinian civilians. CJPME is part of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Québec Coalition, which promotes this campaign. In future reporting I would like to see references to Canadian civil society groups included where relevant.
I encourage you to continue to shed light on Israel policies that violate human rights and hope to see such stories more frequently reported on and published by the Globe and Mail.
Sincerely,
Renée Nunan-Rappard

According to the UN's Nelson Mandela rules, isolation for more than 22 hours a day amounts to solitary confinement, and solitary confinement lasting more than 15 days amounts to torture.
