Dear Toronto Star editors,
I am writing to express my outrage with the inaccurate, unfair and inconsistent standards in your coverage of wars. I am requesting that you change the title of your recent article, “Palestinians mourn teenager shot dead in the occupied West Bank” (April 30, 2026). The headline fails to provide crucial context for what caused the death of the Palestinian teenager.
Human rights groups have described a recent surge in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank waged by Israeli settlers and soldiers. The Palestinians health ministry said at least 15 people had been killed by Israeli settlers’ attacks so far this year. Recently a 16-year-old, Muhammad Majdi Al-Ja’bari died after being run over by a settler’s vehicle in Hebron.
Since October 2023, Israeli occupation forces have killed more than 1,150 Palestinians, including 235 children and 20 women, in the West Bank. More than 11,885 Palestinians have been injured in the West Bank during this same period.
The title of this article should read, “Palestinians mourn teenager shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank”.
You seem capable of getting this right as evidenced with articles like, “Russian attacks in Ukraine kill 4 as U.S. rebukes Moscow for 'escalation' amid peace talks” (January 13 2026), leading me to conclude this is an intentional choice to mislead the reader and shelter Israel from accountability.
The Toronto Star has a responsibility to provide rigorous, contextual, and impartial journalism. This article falls short of that standard. I therefore urge you to amend the title of the piece to reflect a more balanced and evidence-based account of the killing of the Palestinian teenager, specifically attributing Israel in the headline.
Sincerely,
