A 'peaceful' resolution to the encampment would be U of T's full divestment from Israeli apartheid/genocide

"Violence can manifest in its actual use and its potential use. Discouraging an act (the continuation of the encampment) with the threat of violence is inherently violent and is, by no means, peaceful." Continue reading

Coverage of Dattani should not always give greatest prominence to his detractors

"I write with concern about Mr. Thurton’s recent article, “Government now says new human rights chief did disclose key information about controversial social media posts.” While overall, the article presents the revelation that Mr. Dattani had been fully transparent with the government before being selected for the post as head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, the article gives excessive importance and visibility to Dattani’s detractors." CBC takes Housefather's opinion at face value and does not properly identify B'nai Brith as a pro-Israel organization

"Drawing parallels between the State of Israel’s policies (Zionism) and Neo-Nazism and terrorism is not the same as drawing parallels between Judaism and Neo-Nazism or terrorism. The poster was in reference to Housefather’s self-identification as Zionist and not his Jewish identity. Housefather’s full social media post demonstrates his conflation of antisemitism and anti-Zionism and, thus, his persistent attempts at mischaracterizing legitimate criticism of himself and the Zionist project he staunchly supports as unbridled antisemitism. Your inaccurate reporting of events dangerously enables his conflation of anti-Zionism and antisemitism." Continue reading

Fix Your Headline Global News: I Would Be More Than Anxious if I Was Forcibly Displaced

"I take issue with your headline. The term 'anxiety' downplays the gravity of their situation. Words like 'fled' or 'forcibly displaced' would more accurately convey their experience leading to their reunification." Continue reading

Please do not misrepresent the status of the West Bank

"I take strong issue with your sentence, “The Palestinians seek the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza – areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war – for an independent state.”  Your use of the term “captured” rather than “occupied” to describe Israel’s authority over the West Bank is inaccurate and misleading.  You should take note that the International Court of Justice ruling 2004 specifically re-iterated Israel’s status as the occupying power." The term "Israel-Hamas war" is obsolete

Given that the Palestinian death toll is nearing 40,000 and the majority of those killed are women, children, and elderly folks, the term “Israel-Hamas war” has been rendered obsolete. Israel has launched a “war” on a group of largely defenseless civilians and Hamas, militarily, is out financed and outnumbered by Israel’s power. Stop conflating valid criticisms of Zionism with antisemitism

"The framing of why the match drew protesters is problematic. You describe the pressure to boycott the game to be because of 'Israel’s invasion of Gaza in response to Hamas terrorism.' This is misleading. Israel's military invaded Gaza and then besieged the strip, and by omitting this context, you whitewash Israel’s genocidal actions against Palestinians in Gaza. Your sentence should read rather,'…Israel’s invasion and subsequent siege and genocide in Gaza.” Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Re: "School boards shouldn’t rush into adopting anti-Palestinian racism strategies"

"Casey’s rhetorical remark questioning whether we should combat other forms of discrimination like anti-Lebanese, anti-Syrian, or anti-Iranian racism, simply because the Toronto School Board included anti-Palestinian racism in its anti-racism strategy, is egregiously offensive." Hey Globe and Mail, Zionism is not Antisemitism

"Ms. Xu, your use of the term "Jewish teachers" fails to express any skepticism of pro-Israel groups quoted in the article, which are likely conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. Pro-Israel groups have a vested interest in excluding Palestinian resources critical of Israel’s egregious human rights abuses against Palestinians. It is your responsibility to provide readers with a clear understanding of the motivations behind these pro-Israel teachers' claims of “antisemitism.” This framing is not only misleading but also fails to reflect the diversity of opinions within the Jewish community, including those critical of Israeli policies. You must clarify the distinction between anti-Zionism and antisemitism." Continue reading

One-sided reporting by Globe and Mail of U of T injunction against pro-Palestine encampment

"The article disproportionately favors the opposers of the encampment at U of T as you significantly give more space for them to articulate their views, with their quotes prominently featured in five paragraphs. In contrast, only one time was a pro-Palestinian perspective quoted: “This encampment is just one tactic, and we are preparing to employ as many as necessary to achieve our demands.” More glaringly, the only quote you mentioned taints the encampment in a negative light. It is irresponsible to publish an article about the pro-Palestine encampment without any sense of the other side. More students involved in the protest could and should have been contacted and quoted. Burying and silencing Palestinian perspectives is a form of anti-Palestinian racism, intentional or not." Continue reading
