Inadequate context on the violence in occupied East Jerusalem
The segment fails to note that East Jerusalem and the West Bank are considered occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) under international law. This is not an opinion but a matter of a settled consensus at the international level. Israel’s military occupation of these Palestinian territories is critical context for interpreting the nature of, and motivations behind, any “tensions” or violence.

It is encouraging to see that anti-Palestinian racism is finally being acknowledged by school boards, and was recently named by the Peel school board in their anti-racism policy.This is critically important at a time when Israel’s discriminatory treatment of the Palestinians is increasingly acknowledged by human rights groups as apartheid. Sadly, Kay’s rejection of the idea that Palestinians can face racism, and her slanderous remarks against Palestinian solidarity activists, demonstrate just how pervasive the problem of anti-Palestinian bigotry really is.

Even more troubling, Bykhovskaia mentions Palestinians only in the context of wars with “neighbouring Arab states” and “two major Palestinian Arab uprisings.” To justify the practice of open-carrying weapons, repeated references are made to “terrorist” threats, which read here as shorthand for ‘Palestinian.’ To the contrary, it is violence against Palestinians which is far more pervasive. According to Amnesty International, 2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinians since 2005 with some 153 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces, including dozens of children.

It's important to acknowledge that criticism of Israeli policies is not inherently anti-Semitic, just as criticism of Palestinian policies is not inherently anti-Palestinian racism. However, when one crosses the line using language like "brainwashed" and "mass hysteria," it becomes something else entirely.
