Article about student encampments at Western University is devoid of critical context
Such selective reporting does a disservice to your readers and fails to accurately represent the motivations behind the student protests. Your responsibility as a journalist is to provide a full picture, and in this case you have fallen short.

Article crosses the boundary from news into commentary
As a news item, this statement would have to be backed by 1) data (and their source) showing the increase in antisemitic incidents, and 2) evidence that links the increase with the "anti-Israel protests". Without supplying this, and especially along with your labeling of the slogans as "problematic", this paragraph is potentially misleading and more appropriately belongs in an opinion piece.

Re: Universities walk a tightrope as protesters hunker down
If students not being able to graduate in the verdant oasis in the heart of downtown Montreal makes the author so sad, I’d hope she’s sobbing over the thousands of Palestinian students who have had their campuses carpet-bombed. If McGill students having to walk the stage at the “cavernous” Bell Center makes her so sad, I’d hope she’s sobbing over the >7,000 children who will never finish their schooling because they are dead.

Context lacking in article regarding Israeli-imposed blockade in Gaza
Israel's blockade and siege of Gaza did not start on October 7th. Israel has had total control of the crossings into Gaza since 2007 when Hamas won the election and Israel imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on the Gaza Strip. This amounts to collective punishment and is considered a war crime.

Article exemplifies double standard by calling Hamas attacks acts of terrorism, but not Israel‘s
If Canada’s attribution is the reason you’ve made a broad-brush generalization of Hamas as a terrorist entity, then that needs to be made clear in your article. Otherwise, your vocabulary insinuates a moral judgment, which is inappropriate in any article not labeled as an op-ed.

Thank you The Independent for your informative article on student encampments across Canada
"Ms. Rollmann gives voice to the protesters at the MUNL encampment as well as their intention through her reporting. She humanizes the students and their right to freedom of speech. She shows the solidarity amongst the student body whether they are from MENA (Middle Eastern North African) or other marginalized communities. This illustrates the diversity of voices within the encampment rather than a monolithic mob, a theme often used by other reporters."

Thank you Toronto Star for providing a factual and informative article on the Indigo 11
Ms.Paradkar presents a diversity of sources from both the police, Canadian Courts, and most importantly, the pro-Palestinian protesters who were heavily impacted by the escalations of the police. Too often, demonstrators and organizers are brushed aside and their accounts not taken seriously by journalists

Thank you shedding light on the cost to women advocating for Palestinian rights
The pursuit for Palestinian liberation here in Canada is fraught with risks and adversity. Your article highlighted the backlash women, and especially women from racialized groups, face for taking a stand or expressing an opinion on Palestinian liberation.

Hamas shouldn't be unquestionably referred to as a terrorist organization in a news article
If Canada’s attribution is the reason you’ve made a broad-brush generalization of Hamas as a terrorist entity, then that needs to be made clear in your article. Otherwise, your vocabulary insinuates a moral judgment, which is inappropriate in an article labeled “local news.”
