Missing context regarding Israeli promises to halt settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank

Nevertheless, the article fails to fully describe the significance of the Knesset’s vote to revoke the 2005 law on the four settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel promised the US in February that it would halt settlement expansion for six months in exchange for the US blocking a scathing UN Security Council resolution. This is such a betrayal that the Biden administration sought to summon Israel’s ambassador in Washington.  Continue reading

Thanks for shedding light on Israeli strategy and violence in the 2021 Gaza bombing campaign

I would like to thank you for shedding light on the Israeli army’s strategy to influence the Israeli public about the Gaza bombing campaign by creating false social media accounts. This is extremely unbecoming behaviour for a country that is a supposed democracy. Continue reading

Blatant Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism in Hamilton Spectator

The letter makes a false charge that Palestinian activists and slogans, including the BDS movement, are “Islamist.” However, most Palestinian movements (including BDS) are secular and encompass both Muslim and Christian Palestinians. My concern here, however, is not only that it is a false claim, but that it has overtly Islamophobic overtones. The author is using the term “Islamist” solely to try to paint Jama and the Palestinian solidarity movement in a negative light, perpetuating anti-Islam and anti-Palestinian sentiment. Palestinian student voices highlighted in article by The Manitoban

You do a fantastic job at reporting on the university’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and their events for Palestinian Awareness Week. You also provide context on the right of return for Palestinian refugees, the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the illegal settlements displacing Palestinians till today. I commend you for including comments by the president of SJP in discussing the importance of Palestinian Awareness Week for Palestinian students and their allies at the University of Manitoba. Thanks for highlighting beauty of Palestine in UofT newspaper

The comment “As a tourist, I witnessed and experienced just an iota of the discrimination that the Palestinian people experience every day,” aptly describes what many visitors feel when they visit the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The beauty of Palestinian art and culture, as well as the travesty of life under brutal occupation, are effectively captured in words and photographs. Continue reading

One sided coverage of Israeli military occupation

In the article, you mention that a Palestinian man wounded an Israeli man in Huwara on Sunday, but you choose not to mention that Amnesty International accuses Israel of maintaining an apartheid regime against Palestinians. By only citing an attack by a Palestinian, you fail to provide the necessary context for your readers. I insist that you counterbalance your example of the Palestinian attack with mention of Israel’s brutal apartheid regime. Re: “Israel’s pro-LGBTQ record is not ‘pinkwashing’”

Zivo claims that “Israel is a bastion of LGBTQ acceptance in a region that otherwise beats, executes and imprisons queer people.” It is quite ironic that Zivo’s concerns for LGBTQ rights do not extend to queer Palestinians living under Israeli occupation, who are denied their most basic, fundamental human rights. Zivo’s portrayal of Israel as an almost-perfect liberal democracy completely ignores and erases the 6.8 million Palestinians living under Israeli rule against their will. Continue reading

Missing context regarding Palestinian casualties in the Occupied West Bank

Surely the CBC does not believe that the lives of Israelis are worth more than the lives of Palestinians. Your reporting must provide context necessary to reflect the power dynamics at play between the Israeli army and militant groups in the occupied West Bank. As such, I insist that you update the article to provide the information on civilians, children, and the Huwara fatality that I provide above. Continue reading

One-sided reporting on Sarah Jama's support for Palestinian rights by Canadian Press

Unfortunately, your article fails to provide a response to these claims from Palestinians and their allies. Given that you have reported on B’nai Brith’s claims, which depict the Palestinian movement in a negative light, it seems appropriate and necessary to include a response from those who are being targeted. It is not only Jama who is affected by these false and unfair claims which conflate human rights activism with antisemitism. Continue reading

Omissions and misleading statements on EU and Hamas in Toronto Star

"I fear that you omitted a critical element of Borrell’s piece. He wrote that 'While Israelis can rely on a strong state and army, Palestinians have no such recourse. This vast inequality in the ability to control one’s destiny is visible at every roadside checkpoint.' Borrell goes further than merely equating violence ‘on both sides.’" Continue reading
