CBC's unattributed use of "terrorist" in reference to 9/11 violates its journalistic standards

CJPME believes that what is required is nothing less than a total retraction of the new policy, corrections issued to every improper use of the term “terror” in any of its forms in light of this new policy, and an investigation into how the political, economic, and lobbying pressure put forward by a broad array of international actors led CBC editors to make the decision to violate fundamental tenets of the JSP — we acknowledge that such an investigation is likely beyond the scope and mandate of the office of the Ombud, but we ask that the Ombud encourage such an action in an effort to restore public trust. Feedback regarding targetting of Lebanese journalists

Given Israel’s long and well-documented history of manufacturing lies to justify its massacres, any claims made by Israel should never be reported without skepticism or independent verification.  Continue reading

Misleading language regarding Israel's illegal settlements

The use of the terminology “Jewish settlements” is unusual, as settlements are primarily defined by their being Israeli - and illegal - and as such, they are almost universally called “Israeli settlements” by the media and the international community.   Continue reading

Concerns regarding inflammatory language on radio

The commentator is, of course, entitled to direct criticisms at Hamas. However, the manner in which the criticisms were framed is deeply concerning. By characterizing Hamas as being “from the Palestinian state” and describing it as “anti-Christ,” the commentator effectively associated in the minds of readers this inflammatory characterization with Palestinians more broadly. Factual inaccuracies regarding release of Lebanese-Syrian abductees

Important context is missing. The handover of the abductees occurred as Israel continued to abduct more people in southern Lebanon, including three farmers from Halta on September 3, the same day Israel announced the release of the Lebanese-Syrian abductees. We therefore ask that this important context be added. The Nakba was an ethnic cleansing campaign that began before 1948

"To be clear, the Nakba is not contested. The Nakba refers to the displacement and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes by Zionist paramilitary groups that began well before 1948, and continues to this day." Continue reading

Concern regarding Boy George/PNE concert coverage

This is an imbalance in sourcing, not a difference in newsworthiness. CIJA's position was contextualized with a direct quotation; Coordinated Action for Palestine's position was reduced to a description of an action, stripped of the reasoning behind it. This amounts to unbalanced reporting. Continue reading

Thank you for balanced article

We always see in the media opposition to Zionism being conflated with antisemitism, and we therefore thank you for giving space for Elsayed to debunk these claims. Continue reading

Thanks from CJPME

I encourage CBC to continue to include Palestinian perspectives - beyond just citing Gaza Ministry of Health’s statistics - given that Palestinian voices, perspectives and issues are often sidelined in Canadian mainstream media.  Continue reading

Thanks for article on Project Montreal motion

Your focus on the fact that the amended motion contains no commitment to sever institutional ties with Israel is a necessary demand for balance. Continue reading
