Misleading language and biased coverage of Israel's military invasion of the Jenin refugee camp

"While I understand that these segments must be kept brief, and that even the AP is using the language of “hunting” militants, it is nonetheless an alarming and defamatory statement from the Canadian Press. Such a description is also highly misleading, as Israel has launched a large-scale invasion of a Palestinian refugee camp and has already killed and injured numerous civilians. During the last raid on Jenin, Israeli forces killed Sadeel Turkman, a 15-year-old Palestinian child who was shot in the head by an Israeli Sniper. Sadeel is just one of many who have either been killed or badly wounded, with some being in critical condition." Continue reading

Failure to include Palestinian perspectives regarding Israel's military raid on Jenin refugee camp

"First of all, I am flabbergasted at the choice of the title to the article, which it seems aims to emphasize the attack by a Palestinian individual which wounded 8 Israeli civilians, whereas at least 10 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military in the Jenin refugee camp." Inaccurate language and missing context regarding Israeli raid on Jenin refugee camp

"The segment repeatedly quoted or paraphrased the Israeli perspective on its invasion, which allegedly was about counter-terrorism. The segment reinforced this view by showing multiple videos sourced from the Israeli army. However, the segment did not provide an adequate analysis of the event from the perspective of Palestinians, who have called it a “massacre,” and included very little footage from the Palestinian perspective of the attack, despite the widespread availability of such videos. The overall effect of this imbalance was to justify and rationalize Israeli violence." Continue reading

Misleading language and failure to include Palestinian perspectives about the military raid of the Jenin refugee camp

"You claim that Israeli airstrikes have been "halted" over the past two decades. It is true that the Israeli military has not carried out many airstrikes in the West Bank in the past two decades, but this obscures the fact that just two weeks ago the Israeli military launched a drone strike against targets in the West Bank. Your statement is therefore misleading." Continue reading

Problematic and misleading language regarding Israel's military attack on the Jenin refugee camp

"I would like to bring your attention primarily to the use of the word “operation” when mentioning the Israeli military’s actions. This is a large-scale military assault on a refugee camp filled with thousands of civilians; the use of the word “operation” can allude to many different things." Continue reading

Thanks for highlighting grief and suffering of Palestinian community following the military raid of Jenin refugee camp

"Thank  you especially for highlighting Sadeel’s classmates’ grief at her funeral and your effort to humanize this child and her family by letting  her father tell us about his daughter’s life in Jenin Refugee Camp.  In doing so Sadeel becomes not just a statistic, as Palestinian deaths are so often reported." Problematic language regarding Israeli military raid in occupied West Bank

"When mentioning the Jenin refugee camp, we must remember that it is exactly that; a “refugee camp”. The people living there are refugees who have been displaced from their homes and have been under periodic attacks by the Israeli military. The “militants” you mentioned are actually refugees defending themselves from the Israeli military invasions which have indiscriminately targeted men, women and children." Continue reading

Thanks for balanced coverage on the illegality of settlements and Israeli violence

"First, you state that “Under international law, all Israeli settlements in occupied territory are illegal.” My organization has long been concerned with AP’s descriptions of Israel’s occupation in the context of international law. However, this sentence is a significant improvement and we applaud its use in this article and encourage AP to use it more often." Continue reading

Single-viewpoint reporting about UN bias in CityNews

It is inappropriate to leave such a claim unchallenged or without a broader context. As South African international law professor John Dugard, the UN’s former special rapporteur for human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, has pointed out in the past, “This must be viewed in the context of the UN political organs as a whole… the Security Council and Quartet on the Middle East [UN, European Union, United States and Russia] are notoriously pro-Israel and refuse to pay adequate attention to Palestinian issues.”  Continue reading

Insufficient context in Hamas funding article in Toronto Star

"While the entire article was about the arrest of father and daughter duo for their suspected ties to Hamas and funding of bodies related to the organization, there is no description of Hamas" Continue reading
