Thank you for your interview with Philippe Lazzarini on CBC's The National

You gave Mr. Lazzarini a platform to tell us that in all his experience he had "never ever seen in the world" such a rapid descent into starvation affecting an entire population that historically had not experienced hunger, calling it "medieval". Continue reading

Urback's piece fails to acknowledge how politics really works

What’s more, the Prime Minister and his cabinet voted in support of a motion that, among other things, agrees to support international legal investigations of Israel and its leaders.  Urback can try to spin it as meaningless, but in the convoluted world of Canadian politics, it’s not! Thanks for demonstrating both the human and physical reality of Israel’s military assault on Gaza

Marcus and Sawsan Karashuli were courageous in their willingness to be interviewed at a very sad and difficult time for them. Thank you for providing space for their story to be shared. Continue reading

Thank you for shedding light on a divestment pro-Palestinian demonstration

I appreciated the balanced approach of your article, acknowledging the peaceful demonstrations by pro-Palestinians and their exercise of free speech rights Continue reading

Article fails to mention the illegality of the sale of land on Israeli settlements in the Occupied West Bank

The sale of the land is contentious because this was the sale of land on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are illegal according to international law. This land is not available for purchase by Palestinians. Your summary is, unfortunately, misleading to readers who do not already understand the contentious nature of settlements Continue reading

Article on NDP Motion did not find the right balance in several ways

With respect to the Liberal caucus, you juxtapose Anthony Housefather with Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.  While it’s certainly valid to present Housefather’s pro-Israel viewpoint, I don’t feel that Erskine-Smith is necessarily the counterpoint to Housefather.  Housefather has extremely – some might say “blindly” – pro-Israel views.  In fact, Housefather’s views are far more extremely pro-Israel than many Jewish Canadians.  But you fail to present others within the Liberal caucus – e.g. Salma Zahid, Chandra Arya, or Sameer Zuberi – who would give a much more powerful counterpoint. Continue reading

Biased article fails to provide the precise Palestinian death toll

31,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in their ongoing military assault on Gaza. Writing “thousands” obfuscates the scale of Israel’s bloodshed. I would recommend that this photo’s caption be edited immediately Continue reading

"The fighting" are not words that should be used to describe a genocide

It is also disappointing that you only mentioned an important element of context briefly and clumsily at the end of your article with this sentence: “Aid groups say Israel’s near-total blockade of Gaza and the fighting have made it nearly impossible to deliver aid in most of the territory.” Continue reading

Thank you for article that underscores the power of people's voices and public discontent

Thank you for underscoring the leverage public voices have over their political leaders to hold Israel accountable for its ‘immoral war’ on Palestinians in Gaza. Continue reading

Interim report omitted from article about Canada's renewed funding for UNRWA

Considering CBC’s primary source was the Reuters article, there was additional, available information that could have contextualized the “threats and coercion” to which you initially refer. Opting for this vague language rather than the more explicit one may have been a form of self-censorship to muffle Israel’s unethical behaviour. Continue reading
