Thanks for a refreshing article that prioritizes pro-Palestinian perspectives
I particularly appreciated all the testimonies of protestors in front of the Montreal Jewish Library, including representatives of Independent Jewish Voices who oppose Israel’s military operation and maintain that Gravel’s posts are not antisemitic.

Thanks for explaining that antisemitism is a form of anti-Palestinian racism
It was refreshing to read an article that gave voice and space to U of O doctor, Dr. Yipeng Ge, and his thoughts on how the equation to antisemitism is a form of anti-Palestinian racism, as his case was heavily covered in the media.

RE: "South Africa’s sad demise"
Dodek’s argues that Canada should ignore South Africa’s case as a “mockery of the rule of law.” But Dodek himself makes a mockery of international law as he flippantly dismisses South Africa’s powerful case, and as he tries to distract Canadians and their government from a genocide unfolding before our eyes.

No mention of the rise of anti-Palestinian racism hate crimes and Palestinian voices
You fail to mention anti-Palestinian racism, which should have been pointed out since Palestinians are the main group concerned by free speech over the Israel-Hamas war. Simply writing “hate crimes targeting Arab communities” erases the separate Palestinian identity and is a form of anti-Palestinian racism.

Article is a mouthpiece for the Jewish community
Overall, your article fails to provide any critical analysis of the arguments from the letter of the Jewish community leaders or the written statement from the Centre for Jewish and Israel Affairs (CIJA). This makes your article come across as very obsequious and one-dimensional. Beyond this major journalistic failure, there are many other shortcomings of the article.

Article needs correction to include Palestinian perspectives
As the issue of free speech will directly concern them, it is fundamental to include Palestinian perspectives to illustrate how the policies will impact the level of support they get and feel.

Radio news segment fails to specify that the west bank is "occupied"
Your segment fails to clarify that the West Bank is “occupied.” It has become a near-universal journalistic standard that the West Bank be qualified as “occupied” in reporting, as its exclusion obscures important power dynamics at play (Israel as an occupying military power and Palestinians as a population living under military occupation).

Failure to specify that the west bank is "occupied" rather than "captured"
On a critical note, I would continue to urge the AP to reconsider its use of the word “captured” when discussing the West Bank. We consistently read and hear the word “occupied” being applied in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The same standard ought to apply here, especially as the UN Charter specifically outlaws the acquisition of territory by force.

Lack of clarity regarding the status of the occupied West Bank
You accurately report in the twelfth paragraph of this article that the Palestinian Authority is still subject to the Israeli occupation. “The PA,” you write, “set up following the 1990s Oslo interim peace accords, exercises limited governance over parts of the West Bank.” Language to this effect is credible – though further context would improve clarity.

Thanks for featuring Palestinian author Jackie Khalilieh in your article
Your inclusion of Palestinian author Jackie Khalilieh is important, especially in a time where a lot of the media coverage about Palestinians is negative. Furthermore, including Khalilieh in this list will empower Palestinian voices while raising awareness of the challenges faced by Palestinian immigrants in Canada.
