Montreal Gazette Please Stop coddling Housefather's Crocodile Tears

"While I am not here to argue how Housefather must have felt seeing this poster, it is inaccurate and unfair to report it as an antisemitic incident. To further your framing of this incident as antisemitic, you fail to fully quote his response to the poster and exclude the part where Housefather explicitly writes on social media that he “will keep being a proud Jew and a Zionist.” While the poster clearly condemned Housefather for his Zionist (not Jewish) ideology, Housefather’s response on social media demonstrates his tendency to deflect any legitimate criticism by deeming it as antisemitic." Global News at 11: Not all "Jewish teachers" are "supporters of Israel"

"Throughout the segment, the various hosts use the terms 'supporters of Israel' and 'Jewish teachers' interchangeably. These subtle word choices are dangerous, as they foster an association between antisemitism and anti-Zionism. I am confident that there are Jewish teachers and Jews more broadly who are in staunch opposition to Israel who would feel alienated by Global News’ characterization of Jewish people as 'supporters of Israel.'" Housefather's Zionism is the target of the poster and not his Jewish identity as the CBC claims.

"To further their framing of this incident as antisemitic, the CBC fails to fully quote his response to the poster and exclude the part where Housefather explicitly writes that he “will keep being a proud Jew and a Zionist.” While the poster clearly condemned Housefather for his Zionist (not Jewish) ideology, Housefather’s response on social media demonstrates his tendency to deflect any legitimate criticism by deeming it as antisemitic." Concern over Associated Press article about "turbocharged" West Bank settlement expansion

"I take strong issue with your sentence, “Israel captured the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, territories the Palestinians want for a future state.”  Using the term “captured” rather than “occupied” may mislead the reader into thinking that Israel has a strong claim to, or ownership of, these Palestinian territories. Nevertheless, such usage runs directly counter 1) to how international law views the military seizure of territory, 2) to how the international diplomatic community currently views Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories, and 3) to how both words are understood in plain English." One-sided reporting of U of T injunction against pro-Palestine encampment by the Toronto Star

"The article disproportionately favors the judge of the ruling against the encampment at U of T, Markus Koehnen, as you significantly give more space for him to articulate his views, with his quotes prominently featured. In contrast, pro-Palestine perspectives are confined to just three paragraphs. It is irresponsible to publish an article about the pro-Palestine encampment while burying the perspectives of the proponents of the encampment. More students involved in the encampment could and should have been contacted and quoted." Winnipeg Sun, how does a room chanting against genocide sound like a "Hitler rally" ?

"Holding a Palestinian flag and cheering against Israel's apartheid state does not make you a Nazi. Drawing these types of parallels and demonizing solidarity with Palestine is a clear case of anti-Palestinian racism." Continue reading

Associated Press needs to clarify that Palestinians from Gaza are not fleeing, they are being forcibly displaced

"Palestinians are being forcibly displaced to areas that Israel deemed safe just to get attacked again and forcibly displaced again. As reported by BBC, “many have been displaced five or six times” already. As early as January, the UN Humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, called Gaza 'unhabitable.'" Continue reading

Re: ““Foreign interference bill passes, but online harms and citizenship bills left on hold until House comes back”

"I felt that Mr. Cnockaert’s article on unfinished Parliamentary business (“Foreign interference bill passes, but online harms and citizenship bills left on hold until House comes back”) gave a very one-sided perspective of the Online Harms Act, Bill C-63. By choosing to interview only Shimon Fogel, CEO of the pro-Israel Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) about the bill, the article falsely suggested the bill was an open-and-shut case of 'good law' vs. 'evil Internet content.'" Thank you Toronto Star for excellent piece on Islamophobia

"As rightly pointed out by Amira Elghawaby, the federal government’s Special Representative on Combating Islamophobia, this incident is a blatant attempt to portray Canadian Muslims and communal prayer as threatening and dangerous. Such content is undeniably Islamophobic and contributes to the growing climate of fear and hostility towards the Muslim community in Canada." Continue reading

Global News article on weekend protest could have been slightly stronger

"In terms of improving the coverage, I would simply have suggested, first, that Mr. Carpenter seek a direct quote from a representative of the protesting group. Second, I would have suggested that Mr. Carpenter seek a supportive comment from another player. He quotes a bystander, who questions the group’s tactics, but Carpenter does not seek comment/input from other groups which would be supportive." Continue reading
